Latest Poem I've Written
CLIMBING STAIRS by s. streight
The climbing stairs we all must take
The thrusting forward, is no mistake
The upward climb, to maturity
The leaving behind, of childlike purity.
We all look back with longing glances
As time moves forward, as time advances
straining forward to the utmost summit
sometimes tripping, sometimes stumbling
forward we go in concentration
intense on reaching our scheduled destination.
And now in afterthought or hindsight suggested
While at the summit in the midst of dedication
Looking back with arrogant justification
We survey the gain that life has brought us
And count the cost of precious losses.
In the wink of hooded eye
And if truth stands, by our side
The door will open to life’s true meaning
And close upon, selfish reasoning.
Maturity is but a mental state
which some attain, but most refrain.
It’s not in the eye of biased beholder
But in the actions of someone bolder
Someone yes, who takes the time
To understand there’s more to life
Than getting and grabbing and selfish purpose
Maturity then, is unselfish service.
And if enlightened, comes acceptance
And if mature, a well learned lesson
But if achieved in urgent pleasure
humanity forsaken, with self-centered gesture
Maturity is lost in all its force
And self from humanity, becomes divorced.
Carefully watch where foot does tread
With each step, search well ahead
Maturity’s found within due season
Led by wisdom and upright reason.
